JSON Formatter Online

Use this JSON formatter online to turn compact or messy data into clean, readable JSON. It works as a JSON beautifier, JSON viewer, JSON validator and lightweight JSON editor without sending your data to a server.

Paste API responses, logs or configuration data, or use Open JSON File to read a local .json file. You can pretty print JSON, validate syntax, minify JSON, sort object keys, inspect nested data in tree view and download the result.

What is JSON?

JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It is a text format used to store and exchange structured data in APIs, configuration files, web applications, logs and many developer tools.

JSON uses objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans and null values. Although its name comes from JavaScript, JSON is used by almost every modern programming language.

What does a JSON formatter do?

A JSON formatter parses valid JSON and rewrites it with indentation and line breaks so the structure is easier to read. This is also called formatting, pretty printing or beautifying JSON.

This formatter can use 2, 3 or 4 spaces, optionally sort object keys and show the result as formatted code or an expandable JSON tree.

How do I open a JSON file?

Click Open JSON File and choose a .json file from your device, or drag a JSON file directly onto the input editor. The file is read locally in your browser.

Nothing needs to be uploaded to JSONFormatter24.com. After opening the file, you can format, validate, minify, inspect and download it again.

JSON formatter vs JSON viewer: what is the difference?

A JSON formatter changes how JSON is displayed by adding readable indentation. A JSON viewer helps you inspect the structure, often with syntax colors or an expandable tree.

This tool combines both jobs. The formatted view is useful for copying code, while Tree View is useful for exploring deeply nested objects and arrays.

How do I validate JSON?

Paste your data and click Validate JSON. The browser parses the text using strict JSON syntax. If parsing fails, the tool reports an error and highlights the approximate problem location when the browser provides one.

Common JSON errors include missing quotes, trailing commas, unescaped characters, missing brackets and using single quotes instead of double quotes.

What is a JSON beautifier or JSON pretty print tool?

A JSON beautifier and a JSON pretty print tool are essentially names for the same task: converting compact JSON into an indented, human-readable layout.

Beautifying does not change the underlying values. It only changes whitespace and presentation, unless you explicitly enable key sorting.

What does minify JSON mean?

Minifying JSON removes unnecessary spaces, indentation and line breaks while keeping the same data. This produces a smaller string that is useful for transport, storage, API payloads or compact configuration.

Click Minify JSON to create a compact version, then copy or download the result.

What are JSON lint, JSON parser and JSON validator tools?

A JSON lint or validator checks whether text follows JSON syntax. A JSON parser reads valid JSON and turns it into a data structure that software can work with.

This page parses JSON in your browser to validate it, produce formatted or minified output, calculate structure statistics and build the tree viewer.

Is my JSON private?

Yes. Formatting, validation, tree rendering and file reading happen in your browser with JavaScript. Your pasted JSON is not intentionally submitted to JSONFormatter24.com for processing.

As with any sensitive data, you should still avoid pasting secrets into browser extensions or third-party tools you do not trust.

Can I sort JSON keys?

Yes. Enable Sort keys before formatting or minifying. Object keys are sorted alphabetically at every nested object level, while array order is preserved.

Sorting can make configuration files and API responses easier to compare, but remember that it changes object key order in the output.
